Barts and The London Queen Mary's School
of Medicine and Dentistry, Whitechapel, London

calfordseaden health & safety acted as health & safety adviser on this new £45 million medical school, which is one of a kind in both the uniqueness of the building and the purpose it serves, by creating a landmark and stepping- stone in the redevelopment of the Whitechapel area.

The school is divided into six institutions; Institute of Cancer, Institute of Cell and Molecular Science, Institute of Health Sciences Educations, Institute of Dentistry, William Harvey Research Institute and Wolfson Institute of Preventative Medicine. The transparent building allows views into the building from the street and the mews running alongside.

Nine specially commissioned coloured glass panels have been incorporated into the exterior glass, which depict medical abstract images. Natural light floods into the laboratories, offices and workstations, which is a proven benefit to working conditions. The football pitch sized underground laboratories can accommodate up to 400 scientists, also housed underground are seven research centres.

The school has four ‘pods', the Cloud, Cell, Mushroom and Spikey. Together these pods house two, 25 seater seminar rooms, an interactive learning facility for local school children, a reception, breakout areas and a meeting/lecture room.
