Pembury Road, Eastbourne

This scheme comprises the redevelopment of two adjacent sites in Eastbourne into a 62 apartment extra care scheme.  The scheme is being developed by a wide range of partners including Saxon Weald Housing Association, Eastbourne Borough Council (EBC) Estates and Housing, East Sussex County Council (ESCC) Estates and Adult Social Care Departments with Denne Construction as Framework Contractor.

One of the development sites is currently used as offices and a temporary day care centre, the other is an existing sheltered housing scheme comprising bedsits with shared bathing facilities.  As part of the co-ordinated strategy to improve the quality of this type of housing in the borough the present tenants have been decanted into better accommodation.

The proposed scheme meets key strategic priorities for EBC and ESCC by providing innovative type of 'housing with care' provision for older people who are vulnerable and have a housing and care support need.

The extra care model offers an alternative to traditional care homes, enabling residents to maintain maximum independence and dignity while providing 24 hour onsite care with communal facilities and a focus for the wider community.  It also meets key government agendas for sustainable communities, independence and choice.
