Midmoor Road, London

Midmoor Road is a pioneering project that shows how a low-energy retrofit can make deep cuts in carbon emissions from social housing. This project has been instrumental in exploring the most appropriate & effective methods of refurbishing street properties to high environmental standards.

The project will be following the same Passivhaus principles, which are proving increasingly popular for new-build projects in the UK but are rarely used for refurbishments. As part of this approach, high levels of thermal insulation will be installed, together with vast improvements in airtightness.

Our in-house sustainability advisers have advised on each option, assessing their suitability in terms of performance, cost and payback in time. Three of these six Edwardian street properties have been refurbished using these preferred options, including increasing insulation levels as much as practically possible, improving air tightness, introducing whole house ventilation with heat recovery & solar thermal heating. Photovoltaic panels and a gas fired Combined Heat & Power boiler has also been incorporated into one property. Smart meters have been provided to enable residents to monitor their energy use and a DVD has produced to help them learn & familiarise themselves with the technologies in their new homes.
