Round table discussion with leading house builders
15/11/11 - 15/11/11

On 20th October calfordseaden hosted a round table discussion in central London to talk about the prospects of building more homes.  The debate was chaired by Bob Keats, Chair of the Charted Institute of Housing's South East branch and was attended by representatives from several leading house builders.

The topics included:

  • Planning reforms are contradictory and confusing and are unlikely to make it easier to build new homes.
  • House building is being delayed by spats over rent levels. Councils are vetoing rent levels being set by social landlords receiving grant under the HCA's affordable rent programme, which is delaying contracts being signed. House builders, in turn, can't start on site building homes for sale until affordable partner pinned down.
  • Overseas investors buying up first-time properties in the Capital and evidence in high value areas, such as Cambridge and Oxford.
  • Group confident recovery well under way before 2014/2015.
